About Karen Walton (WGC, WGA-W Emerita)

Canadian film and television writer Karen Walton’s unlikely career began with her winning entry in a local public radio writing contest, in 1992. Since then, her provocative voice and original vision have been featured in a variety of genres and formats.

Best known as the screenwriter of the indie cult horror classic, Ginger Snaps (2000), she has also written for groundbreaking television series such as Bell Media/BBC America’s Orphan Black, Showtime’s Queer As Folk, and CBC’s Straight Up, and adapted true-stories for broadcast movies, specifically Heart - The Marilyn Bell Story, and the multiple-award-winning, The Many Trials of One Jane Doe.

Like most professional screenwriters, Karen has spent much of the past two decades in formal development on dozens of hours of as-yet unproduced original and adapted films and series with producers and broadcasters in Canada, the UK and the US.

Her popular and critically acclaimed work has been recognized by the Canadian Academy’s Screen Awards for Best Writing in a Movie of Mini-Series for Jane Doe, Best Dramatic Series for Orphan Black, a Canadian Comedy Award and a Toronto International Film Festival Special Jury Citation for her screenplay for Ginger Snaps.

Much in demand as a writing mentor, consultant, lecturer, and story editor specializing in elevating the careers of traditionally marginalized creators, Karen’s commitment to an equitable and inclusive industry has been recognized with ACTRA’s Nell Shipman Award, WIFT Toronto’s Crystal Award for Mentorship, WGC’s Writers Block Award, and the prestigious Margaret Collier Award for her contributions to the screenwriting profession in Canada.
